Shrub shearing is a maintenance technique used to shape shrubs quickly, and is extremely effective for certain varieties, especially when the shrubs form a large hedge or cluster. Sheared shrubs can lose their natural shape and often detract from a more natural landscape design; however, shearing can effectively maintain the desired shape of a hedge or large shrub.
Though the most time-efficient shrub management technique, shearing can leave a dense outer crown that does not allow light and airflow, and can seriously hinder the flower bud development. Restricting light and airflow can increase insect and disease activity, requiring intervention with pesticides. For most shrub management issues our Certified Arborists recommend hand pruning; however, certain circumstances such as invasive or fast-growing shrubs and large hedge management require shrub shearing.
